Basil is a staple in our summer garden. I plant several basil plants we use for pesto and caprese each spring. At the end of the season, I freeze what is left into ice cubes to use in soups and sauces throughout the winter months. Did you know that basil can be rooted in water creating more plants? The process is simple and the rooting happens quickly, making multiple plants from a single pot.
The only thing you need is a glass of water. I cut several stems off the original pot and placed them in water. In just a few days the roots began to grow. Pro tip: change the water every other day to ensure the plants have fresh water. You will have new plants ready to be planted in about a week. Be sure to water them thoroughly in the beginning. Basil loves water.
Here are the plants I rooted. They are alive and thriving.
These plants are from the original pot. I divided them into several different clumps and planted them separately. It’s a great way to make the most from one pot of basil. Happy gardening!
