If you’ve been on social media lately, chances are you have seen the 2021 Southern Living Idea House. The house, built by Artisan Signature Homes and designed by Sarah Bartholomew, is located in Louisville, KY. While old houses will always and forever be my personal favorite, this home has many of the same charming details. The fluted columns on the front porch, the shutters, and the hardware create an exterior that’s timeless and classic. Moving inside you’ll find hardwood floors, millwork, and custom touches – all “old house” details that I love. Let’s take a closer look.

The entry
The entry features custom-painted floors and beautiful millwork. Note the wood tone on the banister. The seagrass runner trimmed in blue is tailored yet understated.
the living room
The living room is light and airy, yet cozy and inviting. French doors across the back open up to a beautiful outdoor dining area. The coffered ceiling and millwork ad weight without being too heavy.
The bourbon bar is located adjacent to the living room. Perfect for entertaining.
the library
So many great details in the library! Love the browns and the curated gallery wall! The fringe on the sectional adds a traditional touch to a modern piece.
Looking closer at the wall treatment, notice the hand-stenciled border on the grasscloth wallpaper.
the powder room
The powder room also received a hand-painted wall treatment. The scallop detail on the vanity is so pretty and those sconces!
the kitchen
More pattern on the floor in the kitchen. The butcher block island adds so much warmth to the space. Fabric-backed glass front doors add pattern and conceal contents.
the dining room
I cannot tell you how much I love the wicker chairs, cushions, and farm table in this formal dining room! It isn’t easy to strike a balance with high/low, rustic/fine, but Sarah Bartholomew did it beautifully!
THE MASTER BEDROOM
Moving on to the master bedroom. So many pretty details here! I love the textiles, skirted bench, and scallop duvet cover.
master bath
Cafe curtains soften the bath area. How about that willow tub skirt?
downstairs guest bedroom
The guest bedroom. Mom used to have a skirted bedspread like this. So charming! I rather like the old-school way of making the bed by pulling the spread over the pillows. The color palette in this room is light a burst of sunshine.
The morning bar continues with yellow accents from the guest room. The fullness of that sink skirt is perfect!
laundry room
After having recently planned my own laundry room, this design is brilliant! Custom cabinetry with all the trimmings and that sink!
twin bedroom
The twin bedroom might be my favorite! The stenciled ceiling and walls, blue and white pattern mixing, and natural textures come together to create the perfect space.
twin bathroom
The pattern continues on the ceiling in the twin bathroom. The navy blue soaking tub and shower curtain!
