I’m excited to get started on fall gardening! One of the things I look forward to each fall is planting our window boxes. My usual go-to is pansies along with something flowing like ivy or vinca and something textural like dusty miller. In years past, I’ve used small shrubs such as boxwood or dwarf spruce. You can never go wrong with evergreens. Kale is another great fall “filler”. Let’s take a look at some inspiration.

My love for boxwood is no secret. They are beautiful when used in containers. Boxwood can be pruned into shapes if desired.

Pansies add a nice splash of color against the evergreen boxwood foliage!

Ornamental kale is traditionally used in fall plantings. It is considered hardy in zones 2-11. It’s best to wait until the summer heat has ended the leaves will not tolerate extreme heat. I love the combination in the example above -ornamental kale, pansies, catmint, and lavender.

Here’s another example using ornamental kale and adding in dusty miller and ivy.

Another beautiful option if you have more space is to use a variety of ornamental kale.

I’ve always thought it would be fun to grow an edible fall window box. The tuscan kale pictured above is so pretty!

The window box above uses more traditional fall colors. Unlike pansies, mums tend to bloom and fade. They could easily be replaced with magnolia cuttings around the holidays.
