Today, I’m sharing a few tips about semi-formal wedding attire including dress options for multiple ages and budgets.
Determining what to wear to a semi-formal wedding can be tricky. Semi-formal weddings are a time to have a little fun with colors (as long as it’s not white), patterns, and accessories. Dress lengths can range from above the knee (as long as it’s not too short) to tea-length or middy. You might consider the time of day – save the long dresses for evening weddings, anything after 6:00 pm. Location is something to consider also – mid-day beach weddings are very different from late afternoon weddings at fancy venues that will carry into the night.
Avoid wearing white or anything that will take attention away from the bride.
The number one rule is to never wear white or anything that will take attention away from the bride. Lighter colors are best for daytime weddings while late afternoon/evening weddings call for darker colors. There was once a time when black was not acceptable, but that has changed, although I personally would avoid wearing it during the day. Of course, if you do not feel good wearing it, don’t. But, if Martha Stewart says it’s okay, then it’s okay with me.
An excellent tip to remember the busier the dress, the simpler the accessories, and vice versa. Some favorites include this stunner from Tory Burch and also this gorgeous dress by Ulla Johnson. Looking for something more budget-friendly? How about this satin dress (it’s beautiful on!) or this simple classic dress that comes in several colors.
