My closet has needed a makeover for the longest time. I wanted to maximize storage which can be tricky, but not impossible in a reach-in closet. Creating a space that is aesthetically pleasing was a must even if space is limited. I’m really happy with how my little corner of the house turned out. Scroll down to find out my tips to maximize storage in a reach-in closet.
Replace a single door with double doors.
One of the first things we did was to take down the single door and replace it with double doors. This required each sidewall to be shortened a bit creating a bigger opening. Instantly, everything was more easily accessible.
Install a closet system.
We installed this closet system which gives me three hanging options. Long clothing (dresses, robes, cardigans) is on the left. Shirts and blouses are on the right, broken down into color groupings. Two of the shelves in the tower are fixed. The remaining shelves are adjustable which is nice for storing taller boots in the winter.
Rotate seasonal clothing.
We live in Greensboro where we experience all four seasons. I rotate fall/ winter clothes with spring/summer twice a year. This gives everything room to breathe. I also use these slim black velvet hangers. They use far less space than the bulky wood hangers I had been using. The shelf above the rod is something we added. You can never have too many shelves! I have this basket for seasonal items like scarves, caps, gloves, etc.
Add storage with drawers, shelves, and baskets.
The drawer is an extra option with the closet system. It currently holds my travel toiletries and bags. We also added the shelf on the right to hold my straw hats. Technically, it’s one shelf cut down to make two shelves.
I’ve adapted to folding my denim rather than hanging it. I really like the way it looks this way! Cropped denim is on the bottom shelf and long denim above.
It makes me giddy to open my closet and see everything in order!
Add a motion sensor light.
We added a shelf across the top. It holds out of season items and handbags. Which reminds me, we replaced the old pull-chain light that was in the top of the closet with this motion sensor light. I love it!!
Store shoes using over the door shoe bags.
Last and certainly not least, these canvas shoe bags are a lifesaver. I’ve had them for years as you can probably tell by the dirt smudges. My exact shoe bags are no longer available, but these are similar. I also like these with accessory storage.
