Lately, I’ve been searching high and low for replacement cushions for our Byholma wicker chairs from IKEA. Our dog, Reagan took a bite out of one of the cushions when she was younger and I’ve been meaning to replace both cushions ever since. I tried ordering online, but they aren’t available. They also aren’t available in any of the stores. I scoured the internet, but most cushions come in sizes that don’t really fit these chairs.
The other day I was cleaning out some cabinets and found fabric leftover from my dining chairs project. So I quickly made two covers for the old cushions. Problem solved!
In case any of you are in the same boat, here’s what I did.
I traced around one of the cushions. Then cut the fabric about 1/2″ outside that line. Once that was done, I used that cut piece as a pattern to cut three more exactly like that one. Next, I pinned two pieces together and with a sewing machine, stitched around the fabric following the line I had traced, leaving about a 1/2″ seam allowance. I left an opening unstitched on the back (curved) side of the cover to insert the old cushion.
I just pinned it together to hold it in place so that I could hand stitch it closed.
To get the tufting effect, I used this cording I found at Micheal’s.
I tied a knot on one end and pulled it through to the other side, then knotted it to secure.
Here’s a close up. It looks the same on the reverse side.
I found these cute pink pillows here. They were only $5.99!
