It’s that time of year again when college students and parents begin gathering dorm room essentials & decor for the big move in day. It’s especially exciting (and scary) for first timers. There are so many fun ways to decorate a dorm room. Anything looks better than plain ole’ cinder block walls, right? Speaking from experience, I can say that guys don’t get quite as into decorating the dorm room as girls do. A couple of posters or a school flag and that’s it – or at least it was for our son. Girls, however, can sometimes go all out to create the most adorable spaces.
Most universities provide two of everything – bed, shelves, desk, wardrobe, and chest of drawers. That’s a lot of furniture for a small space, but there are a few ways to maximize space.
One way is to raise the beds high enough to allow under bed storage. Most schools provide the extras needed to modify the bed height. Then you can use every square inch for storage.
Wall tapestries are a great way to add color & pattern to an otherwise bland space. They can also act as a headboard or provide privacy as shown in the first image above. There are literally tons of options when it comes to wall tapestries including beachy scenes, medallions, flags, and more.
Photos of friends and family are a must and there are many creative ways to display them. Most universities have a “no holes in the wall” policy, but luckily there are several ways around that. Command strips and hooks are your friend.

Custom headboards and bed skirts are another way to add personality to a dorm room.
Use removable wall paper either on the actual walls or on foam core/poster board to create a focal wall.
