Before we lost Mattie Gray, we planned on getting a puppy this summer. We thought it would be nice for the two to bond and for MG to teach the new puppy the ropes. Needless to say our plan changed after MG’s passing. We went a week without a dog and I can speak for the family when I say it was unbearable. After talking to our vet who told me that there is never a bad time to get a dog, I began searching for Weim puppies. I found a puppy, the only one left in the litter of ten in Oxford, NC. With great excitement, we quickly scheduled a trip to see her.
My husband and I held her and watched her play and knew we were ready to once again bring a puppy into our lives. She wasn’t quite old enough to take home with us that day so we picked her up the following week. That week seemed to drag on and on. R and I were nervous – it had been so long since our last puppy. Old dogs are really great -they love a schedule and hold you to it. Puppies are, well, a wild card. We listened to podcasts and read up on training to refresh ourselves. All while helping to take our minds off of sweet MG who we still miss dearly.
Once we brought Reagan our new puppy, home, she was a little scared at first with all the new sounds and smells. It wasn’t long before she was running around like a wild child, clumsy at first, but finally maneuvering our crazy long grass like an acrobat. She had us in stitches just watching her.
She already has a ton of toys, one or two new ones, but mostly MG’s old toys. She loves her monkey and has already learned to fetch. She also slept through the night last night. (Sending virtual high fives to everyone out there) When it comes to potty training, she’s good there too. This little girl is smart I tell you.
Of course, the free toys found in the yard are her most favorite, lol.
When she goes missing, which is rare because we are g.l.u.e.d to her, we can usually find her under the coffee table. It’s so funny to walk by and only see a few toes sticking out. Enjoy it while you can Reagan, because you are going to be too big one day.
Reagan came into our lives at the perfect time. While there will never be a replacement for Mattie Gray, Reagan has already brought us all so much joy. My only wish it that the two could’ve met.
This is so sweet and I really hope Reagan brings happiness into your home (although by the sound of it, it seems like she already has!). After our former beloved dog passed away, it took us two and a half years to get up the courage to welcome another dog into our home, but I'm so glad we did! Although the puppy part was excruciating, she automatically became that extra family member that we needed.
Thank you Chelsea! Yes, the puppy years are worth it.
Congratulations on your new addition to the family! Reagan is adorable Rene.
Thank you Allison!
I just saw your facebook post and popped over to the blog! OMG!!!! Reagan is PRECIOUS! Over the weekend I was telling my daughter about Mattie Gray, with tears streaming down our faces, and of course talking about how hard it's been without our Gwen girl. Seeing photos of Reagan brought a HUGE smile to my face. I look forward to seeing lots photos as she settles in with her new family. So happy for you.
Thank you so much Vanessa! She keep us all very busy right now, lol. I'm sorry about your sweet Gwen.
aaaaw, she is adorable!!! i am so happy for you!
Thank you Cassie!
Oh, it just warms my heart to see that sweet baby face. I am so happy for you and I look forward to seeing more photos as she grows.

Thank you Shelley. She warms our heart too.
Thank you Shelley. She warms our heart too.
Oh no you didn't!!!! What a face. YIPEE
🙂
She is a beauty…. Sometimes the best way to heal from a loss is to find another outlet for all that love… I love happy beginnings….
Agreed, thank you Cindy.
Precious!
Thanks Catherine.
This post has me grinning from ear to ear! I cried when I told my husband about MG. I have followed your blog for years and was so heartbroken, Reagan is so adorable and she is blessed to have you as her mom and dad:-)
Thank you. This means so much.
Oh Rene! She's beautiful!! So happy for you!
Thank you Lisa.
Awesome!
🙂
Wonderful news, Rene!! So happy for you and your family!! Reagan is so adorable!
Thank you Fran!
She's beautiful! I was hoping you might move quickly to get another dog, but I know that's a personal decision. The empty house, sans pup–it's awful, no? Welcome, Reagan!
Alice, it was so awful. We had never experienced life without a dog before and realized it's not who we are. Thank you.
We lost our beloved Zeke to cancer in early October – I understand your devastation and heartbreak. I thought we would wait a while to get a new dog, but the first rescue puppy that stumbled into my husband's lap stole our hearts (I was firm we were not getting a baby, that didn't last long!). Rooney has been delightful and frustrating all at the same time, but he gets better each day. Yesterday he discovered the tiny white moths and chased them all through the back yard. Adorable – sins of earlier in the day completely forgiven!
I can completely relate Suzanne. The struggles (small as they are) are so worth it. And how fun it is to watch puppies discover their world.
So adorable, I'm not sure it was any coincidence that Reagan was the last puppy. It's almost like Mattie Gray sent Reagan to you to be loved as much as she was. Wishing you fun days ahead with your new love.
I've had the same thought Barbara. You never know. Thank you 🙂
We got the last puppy in a litter too and at first I was a bit worried… what's wrong with the puppy? but it is the most wonderful dog !! We just got so lucky and so did you!
~Marcy
I was a bit concerned, but so far so good. It was meant to be.
So happy you were able to find her! She is adorable!!
She is just adorable! I saw her on IG but I love seeing these bigger photos of her! It is so hard to lose a special dog, and reading your last sentence about wishing they could've met left a lump in my throat. We lost our beloved Golden Retriever Scout last July, and finally got our new puppy in November. I still think of Scout almost every day, but Hudson has filled some of the hole left and helped us to heal. I know your new baby will do the same for you:)
Congratulations! and can't wait to see more photos on IG!

what a cutie!! nothing beats a puppy, the good and the bad.
we lost our beloved dog in march and traveled 14 hours away to get the one left from a large litter. we also could not bear the quiet.
MG will always hold a piece of your heart (the forever place) but there is always room for another.
enjoy!
