Weathered wood has been trending for quite a while now and I believe it might be here to stay (at least in small amounts). I really like the way different wood finishes can round out a space making it more interesting and less predictable and packaged.
The black table below was a gift from my aunt who snagged it at a yard sale. I painted it black at the time, but it began to feel too heavy in the room. I wanted something lighter, but white seemed too stark. So I decided to try a weathered finish.
Once this project was underway I remembered why I never refinish furniture. It takes forever! Citristrip spray is what I used to remove the layers of paint and old varnish from the table. It worked instantly and didn’t smell awful like some furniture strippers.
After days hours of sanding with my palm sander the table was prepped and ready for the next step. Using paint from an old project, I mixed BM Gray Owl with water. I lightly brushed the paint on and quickly wiped it off with an old rag.
Once this mixture dried the table was sealed with a couple of coats of satin poly. I like how some of the old finish still shows. Part of that is because I was sick of sanding and was ready to be finished with this project!

Looks great Rene! I white washed an old desk that I use as an island in my kitchen. Stripping paint is time consuming but worth the effort! I must say, I always admire your windows. I need new windows.
René says
Worth the effort I suppose :). We love our windows! Replaced them several years ago and wanted something in keeping with our house. They are vinyl on the outside & wood on the inside. They also tilt for easy cleaning. I could go on and on…

I love everything about that room! The portraits of your boys are beautiful. Are they paintings? And that animal print pillow is amazing! Where oh where did you get it? Your weathered table turned out nicely too! =)
René says
Thank you Kim! Yes, they are paintings of our boys when they were each 4-5 years old. I found the pillow (a pair) on etsy several years ago. Try searching leopard pillow cover and you will definitely have luck.

You really nailed it. I have a few dark pieces that need to be transformed. A local shop said he cannot give away anything dark. You must be so proud of yourself for tackling that DIY.
