You might recall this post where we discussed kitchen soffits/bulkheads and that potentially awkward space that sometimes exists above kitchen cabinets. I stumbled upon this kitchen renovation this morning and just had to share it with you. The cabinets are by Kraftmaid and the owners did the work themselves. Notice the bulkhead and how it gives the kitchen that finished appearance. Much better than a hundred dusty jars and fake plants sitting atop the cabinets, right? Click here for all the details.

I love it, and what a tremendous difference all the molding makes- great inspiration for old soffits! xo Nancy

That is so funny….I was just staring up at that awkward place above my cabinets thinking about how easy it would be to box them in and extend them to the ceiling. What a difference it makes to the overall feel of a kitchen!! And what a pretty and bright kitchen. Thanks for sharing.

It is an area people struggle with Lisa. I say go for it!

I love the black countertops in your kitchen. Are they stone?
René says
Thank you Elizabeth! My countertops are granite – wish they were marble :/

The kitchen looks beautiful and very custom!! Back in the day when we were renovating our kitchen, we did the same thing. See here: http://greenstreetblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/in-my-kitchen-before-after.html
I really think it just provides a cohesive look and doesn't force your eye 'up' to stare at an awkward 'empty' space.
