As promised I’m here to share a few pictures from our teen room refresh. It was fun making changes to this room because this time ( I actually like the color) and because our son gave a little more insight about what he likes. It will most likely be the last refresh before he goes off to college in a few short years and I really wanted him to feel like it is his special place.
I won’t bore with the before pictures today. Let’s just chat about how far the room has come. I made the mood board to keep me on track and stayed pretty close to the plan. As most of you know, the process is an evolution.
Here is the room now. The wall color is BM Hale Navy which we all love! It looks so good with the white floors! The curtains came from IKEA and I didn’t realize until last week when I purchased them that they contain a little polyester :(. My first choice is natural fabrics and would only use these in a bedroom or other less traveled room. I would never use them in a main living area. Overall, I’m very happy with the graphic punch they give the room. Our son wanted his curtains to have light blocking ability so I bought the blackout panels that attach to the backs of IKEA curtains. Have you tried this? Again, I like them for this room, but don’t recommend them for all rooms. I scored this fun little rug from Target just to have something soft to step onto on cold mornings.
The vintage bed (which I love) was something Mom found several years ago. We painted it glossy black and it looks great against the navy walls. I added the mirror, bedding, and wall lamps. Honestly, the pillows are borrowed from another room strictly for photo purposes, because we all know where the pillows end up in a child’s bedroom. I changed out the mat in the water scene painting beside the bed when I purchased these mats.
These are a few of the things that make our boy happy on his wall.
And this is the long board he made and then broke his arm riding. And by the way, last night we thought he had broken both wrists at LAX practice. After spending the morning with x-rays, we were happy to find out that his wrists are okay. #motherofboys #neveradullmoment #whatsfordinner
I kept the secretary desk in its original state. It isn’t as orange in person and really looks nice against the navy walls. Every room needs a little wood.

oh I love how it turned out! I went to ikea to get the same curtains for my twin boys' room but when I saw them in person I decided to wait…i'd seen your mood board and wanted to see if you used them and liked them. I didn't realize ikea had black out attachments! who knew? thanks for the tip. I just might get these after all. going to show the boys your son's room. they're almost ten and can now talk back about how I decorate their room 🙂 I think they'll love what you did as much as I do!

Rene, I love this room! Where did you get that mirror? Those lamps, the curtains and rug all look so great. What an inspiration!
René says
The link for the mirror is there. It was a gift from Kirklands.

Damn girl…loving those navy walls! Did the Ikea curtains come like that….I love the design. It looks great!
René says
They came like that, but could easily be hacked with a much nicer fabric or panel. Thank you!

I love love love it Rene. The wall color with those curtains and the white floor…such a great combination. I didn't know about the room darkening panels from Ikea and will have to look into them. The curtains are such a great design, maybe Ikea will listen to you if you suggest they make them out of 100% cotton 🙂

So glad your son is OK! His room looks so great Rene! Love the bedding and the curtains and the rug is perfect. I agree that the wood looks beautiful against the navy walls. Hale Navy is one of my favorites. I bet your son loves his new room.

We're struggling with where to put sconces on our newly-navy walls (we used BM Hudson Bay). Thanks for showing that they can look good mounted inside the bed frame, over the pillows.

We were limited on space in this room. There isn't room for a bedside table and very little wall space so we just made it work :).

I am so in love with this room!! Every detail is perfect! We are in the midst of redoing our boys room and now I wish we'd painted it navy! Do the Ikea blackout curtains work (would they work in a nursery)? I've been searching for a reasonably priced solution.
René says
Thank you! The curtain liners do block out the majority of light. They come with clips so it is pretty easy to attach them to the other IKEA curtains.

Oooh, that color is SO good!! And, despite the fabric content those curtains look amazing against the navy! Such a great classic look, I love the wood furniture with your white floors, too!

I'm currently debating on dark versus light walls in our (next) living room. Hale navy! Your room really helps me decide.
