I guess if there is a combination of words that makes me smile it would be “light and airy”. These words perfectly describe Mom’s new kitchen. She and D have lived in their 1930’s home many years and the kitchen has already seen one update. It was definitely time for another one and this time even better because walls were removed and appliances moved about to create a more open flow in this galley kitchen.
I do not have before pictures to share, but trust me when I say this is such a gorgeous improvement and it really feels like a completely different room than before. Mom and D had initial meetings with the contractor who made some nice recommendations for re-arranging appliances to make the most of the kitchen’s footprint. Before the remodel, you would walk right into the refrigerator from the back door (which is to the left in the above picture). Now, the refrigerator is tucked away near the breakfast room.
The stove was relocated where an old pantry was eliminated. All of this made such a better use of space!
Mom had her own ideas of how she wanted things to look, but the two of us had fun visiting her local suppliers for tile, granite, sink, wall paper, etc. She knew she wanted a classic, clean, and fresh kitchen that both she and D would enjoy for years to come. And I think she achieved this!
Mom had already chosen granite and when she described it to me, I’ll be honest, it sounded a little “iffy”. She took me to see it in person and I liked it a little better. Bottom line – I wanted her to be happy, and she loved this granite. After seeing it come to life (so to speak), I believe she made the right choice. There is so much character in the larger pieces and the colors are very refreshing!
Mom had also already made a sink selection, but I did have to open my big mouth and show her this option by Kohler. The lower bridge makes cleaning large pots a breeze! And a double basin is a must! Mom had this same faucet in her mountain house and really liked the ease and simplicity of it so that was a no brainer for her. I love that she went with the simple white subway tile backsplash!
The cabinets are all custom made by a local cabinet maker who did an amazing job!
The breakfast room received new wall paper and I love how simple it is – a pattern that has longevity.

This is so so beautiful!! I have a question about the sink – why is a double basin a must? My husband thinks it doesn't make sense, but I feel like we might be missing something (we currently have a double basin, but he wants to change it). I've been looking for a similar paint color – and I love the wallpaper too!! I can't imagine not loving that kitchen!

Mom and I both use one side of the sink for drying pots, etc. and the other for washing hands, dish washing, garbage disposal, and such. You can't do this in a single basin. Does that make sense? It is a personal preference I suppose. Curious, how do you use your sink now?
Playground Prepster says
I guess we kind of use it similarly – although we tend to go right to a towel on the counter to dry. I have an insink colander in the side without the disposal that I'll throw washed sippy cups in to rinse or carrots and potatoes if they need to be washed. It seems now that the boys aren't using sippy cups any more I don't use it all that often. But I like the idea of dishes drying in the sink so the counter isn't as cluttered.

We have the I guess you call it "sink colander" too which is very handy and it usually holds recently washed items. We aren't that good at drying :).

Great remodel! Getting ready to put a design together for my own parents who are in the exact same situation. Love the give and take relationship you had with your mother in regards to the granite and sink. The outcome is lovely~

Very pretty and classic kitchen, Rene. Your mom has good taste (like her daughter!).
P.S. I use my two sinks exactly like you described.

Thanks for the "sink" confirmation Karen :).

Love the kitchen- especially the light colors! I am deducing from the contractor, etc. that your mom may live in the Asheboro area. Such a small world, I am originally from there :)- great place! Thank you for all of your lovely design tips!
