I really like the idea of creating reading nooks within a home. Somewhere for the kiddos or adults to pause and relax.

Great post! Seems like 90% of the entries on House Hunters are huge, "grand" + space-wasting. I don't get it.

I'd love a cozy, little space like this. I'd want a comfy place to sit, some books, and a computer hook-up. I might even keep my financial papers nearby. Unfortunately I don't even have a foyer. Jo @ Let's Face the Music
You aren't alone :).
Perfect ideas. That soaring space is so wasteful (and inappropriate for the style of house, AND hard to decorate)! I love these ideas. Especially creative is that guest room–tiny but so charming!
Casey, you made a great point! Those grand foyers are very difficult to decorate and home feel like they need to fill the space.
We are actually considering doing this above our living room. We have a 20 foot ceiling! Lots of wasted space. Some of our neighbors have actually done this, and the new room makes a really nice sized bonus/TV/media room.
Thanks Nancy! Would love to see examples if you have any to share :).
Dang…what a great idea….I hate that empty space in 2 story foyers…so wasted! This was brilliant.
such a great idea to make a nook out of something. i love these examples!!
I could not agree more! Our home is new, but a cottage style around 1600 square feet, so no large grand foyer here. Our first home was built in 1930 and we loved it (just could not afford that age of home in Charleston). A lot of the new homes built where we moved from (PA) had those grand foyers. I always wondered how people cleaned the light fixture or the window over the front door that is 12' off the ground. Ha! 😉
Wow, what great ideas. I love the idea of making a little office or library in that type of extra space. Totally agree about it being wasteful. Here in LA where every inch of space costs a small fortune, we need to use it all.
Wow. There is so much wasted space in that first picture. An avid fan of reading–I'd just like to say I'd never leave that nook in the third pic!
We have a small bedroom that ends where the grand foyer starts on the second floor so I would probably just make it a larger bedroom. LOVE the reading nooks though.
