Last week when I shared my DIY pine-cone wreath, a reader left a question about how it was hung. About two seconds later, my family and I packed our bags and headed out of town for Thanksgiving. It suddenly occurred to me that I never followed up with the details and that a post was due.
I’m not a fan of big fan of bows, but I do like pretty ribbon or in this case fabric. I could hang our wreath on a wreath hanger, but the location of the door knocker makes it difficult and the wreath flops back & forth. So what I do is this. Que the Mission Impossible music…
Taking the fabric or ribbon that has been cut to the length needed, I hang the wreath using thumb tacks like these.
This is a view of the very top of the door (which is made of wood). The number of tacks I use varies depending on the weight of the wreath. By the way, this wreath is heavy. I used seven tacks total. After the tacks are in place, I cut off the excess fabric if there is any so that from the inside of the door you do not see the ribbon.
As if ya’ll aren’t completely sick of seeing my front door…I used this same method a couple of years ago using jute upholstery webbing and still receive questions about it.
If you like to hang wreaths on your windows, this trick works on windows as well. However, it might require wooden windows.
Hopefully this answers the question. So are you all decorated for Christmas or like me and waiting until the mood strikes?

Yes! That is my method for hanging our wreaths, too! I love that fabric you used Rene. So pretty. It looks like it has a lovely sheen or a little shimmer to it. I've only put out one decoration so far. Hopefully this weekend I'll get it all done although I am aiming for more "simple" this year.

Great minds Allison ;)! I think the fabric is actually a dress lining fabric? I looked and looked and couldn't find ribbon that was wide enough and the right color.

This is such a great idea! I can't use those wreath angers or my door won't close! I jut may have to do this. By the way, your front door is lovely.
be a sweetie,
Shelia 😉

That reminds me, some of our doors will not close either with wreath hangers. Grrr.

What a great way to hang your wreath — I would have never thought to do it this way! We have our tree up at this point and I am just enjoying being crafty during the days and making things to add to our decor collection! 🙂

I use the same little trick! I LOVE your pinecone wreath. I'm like you, still waiting for the mood to strike. Not one single decoration out yet!

I used to think I didn't like bows because I was terrible at making them, but actually I just like the look of less is more…big wide ribbon and a gorgeous wreath…who needs a bow? Your front door always looks beautiful…and your window boxes too!

Thanks for the tutorial! I have been meaning to put up our holiday wreath, but every wreath hanger I've tried so far this season doesn't fit over our door! (The door won't close with the wreath hanger on it.) Your fabric wreath hanger seems like a good solution!

I love how wide your ribbon on your wreath is. So simple and pretty!
I use the thumbtack method for hanging ribbon on my interior doors and clipping Christmas cards to them. 3 ribbons with cards fit nicely on each door and the thumbtacks pop right out at the end of the holiday season.

How should I hang the fabric on a metal screen door? You used pins on the top of your wood door but I don't have that option. Any ideas?

This is such a great idea! I used "invisible" fishing line as my wreath already has a certain look and I wanted to conserve it… I tied it to a single nail that I hammered to the inside, above the door frame. Also, I live on a busy block in the city where there are potential wreath robbers. This method provides a bit of wreath security too… Thanx!! Lila
