You’ve gotta love surprises like putting something in your cart, pressing the check out button, then finding it on sale. It turns out that my favorite lantern at Ballard was 15% off. Even better, it arrived within days of placing the order. We hung it that night and are thrilled with the way it looks! If you recall, the reviews weren’t consistently great, but I disagree. Hanging it was a different story. In fact, you might have heard my husband the night we hung it? Picture us all standing on the table + our 13 year old trying to offer his help (the light weighs 30 lbs. by the way, so whoever said it was not heavy enough, what?). Anyway, without boring you with the details, here she is!
Keep in mind, this is a work in progress room. Now I need to change out the curtain rods for black (or I might just spray paint them) and what do you think about bamboo shades in here to warm it up? The floors are bare and I go back and forth on whether or not to add a rug. If I do it will most likely be this one.
I will try to show some other “work in progress” rooms with you this week. Maybe it is the pending change in seasons, but I have the itch to change things up.

What a great lantern. Perfect size for your room.
Def. spray paint the rod! And I am putting rattan shades on most of my windows. They just add such a textural element.
You dining room is GORGEOUS! What is your wall color… fabulous!

I have been loving that lantern for a while. One question – I read that it was closed on the bottom with metal…is that right….if so, does it do a good job lighting up the room? I'm considering it for the entry. Thanks, pretty dining room! Yes on the bamboo shades and black poles – great idea! Linda

That lantern looks great! Absolutely love the look. I'm on the fence about a rug too. Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing! But the lantern looks perfect there!
Nancy says
absolute perfection! you'll love it even more every time you see it knowing you got it on sale! definitely spray paint the curtain rod instead of buying new. check overstock for the rug before you buy from ballard…i've always been happy with my o.co rug purchases and you cant tell the difference except in price. just my humble opinion. 🙂

Love the lantern…and I do think a natural rug will look good in the DR and help to warm….as will natural shades….it never ends…..
Kat says
Looks great! I think black is needed in every room. I also think bamboo blinds would look amazing in there along with that rug from Ballard. Layers are a good thing:) Lookin' good, girl!

Rene –
It looks great! You reminded me of the day my husband hung our lantern, I think he had it set on a ladder while doing the wiring – it is heavy!!
The lantern lends a completely different look to your room! I love simple solutions like that!

Love the lantern…love Ballard Designs…and if you decide on a rug love your choice!
Coastal Cottage Dreams says
Love your Ballard lantern, looks great in your dining room. I just bought a apothecary lamp from them and just love it……I like the rug that you chose and I actually prefer one under a table.
Have a great week!

Do paint the rod black. Leave the gorgeous white curtains which will be a stunning contrast to the black rod and already look sumptuous with the wall color. Skip the rug and save $200. Spend that on your cute kids! thanks for a lovely and inspiring blog.

It is a wonderful look Rene, and now with the lantern I can see it all coming together. I think the rug/ like bamboo shades will add warmth and ground the room!

Oh my gosh — I just love it! Lanterns over dining room tables = instant love. 🙂

LOVE it! I have also been looking at getting this lantern for my dining room and saw the marginal reviews. Is the bottom open or closed? If the bottom is closed does it cast a shadow on the table? YOu've got me itching to order this thing!
Jane@Cottage at the Crossroads says
Love it Rene! Add the blinds, paint the pole, and then decide about a rug!
Amber B (Simple Dwellings) says
I love it! It looks amazing in the space. And I don't have a rug in our dining room right now either. I took it out for the summer, and debating on what to do next! 🙂

Love it!
I would say….don't make the rod black! I love it the color that it is–it ties in nicely with the bare floors. Bamboo might be a bit heavy for the window…what about sliding shades? Try these panels from Hunter Douglas: http://www.windowwarellc.com/images/31b2f34b-34e8-4c3b-9257-000823457883_1_.jpg
Maybe with a more organic pattern?
Anyway, gorgeous lantern–I love it!!!

This looks fantastic Rene – I love the lantern and everything going on in the room. And the symmetry you have going on is great too – such a great photo you got. I don't think I'd change a thing – I love the room just the way it is. And thanks for the posting the paint color again – that's a great color for this room.

It's beautiful Rene! I really like the touches of black in your dining room and that is the perfect striped fabric on your chairs. I am all about stripes lately.

Thank you for the great feedback!
Julie, the bottom is closed. We knew this before we ordered and decided to take the chance. So far, so good.

Hi! I just started reading your blog and I love the new lantern. I have to throw my two cents in about your curtain rods though. PLEASE don't paint or replace them. The burnished brass looks great and looks very expensive. I love the extra interest and warmth it adds. If they were black it would be boring and too matchy. Roll with it!
Robin 🙂

The lantern looks beautiful! I love the scale and how low it is hung. Also, I just realized we have almost the exact same end chairs…

Ah, I adore that lantern, and it looks so perfect in your room. I could see some black trim on your curtains–maybe easier than painting and certainly cheaper than buying new?!
Janine says
Beautiful lantern and paint treatment. Is the bottom paneled or or just painted drywall with chair rail? What is paint color on walls? Beautiful room!
René says
Thank you Janine! The paint color is sensible hue, SW. The bottom is white painted plaster, but we plan to add box molding sometime this year. I'll definitely post that project when it happens.
